Cold forming

Cold forming is a manufacturing process whereas metal is shaped without removal of material, thus cold forming the component. A blank is placed within a die and a punch is pressed into the blank to cold form the part. The blank then takes on the form of the punch and the die.

The advantages of cold forming vs. machining from solid are:

  • Saving on raw material due to cold forming a shape
  • Reduced machining time on cold formed parts
  • Improved component properties result from cold forming

Cold heading

Cold heading is rapidly producing enlarged sections on a piece of rod or wire held in a die. The resulting shape from cold heading is that the upset portion conforms to the shape of the die cavity. Work pieces are not heated prior to cold heading

Roll forming

Roll forming is a fabrication process whereby a metal sheet is deformed continuously in a linear manner by passing it through a consecutive series of rolls (roll forming) which produce a predetermined profile. Roll forming produces thin parts with a constant cross section. Roll forming is used by various industries
